While the Age-Friendly Niagara Council's commitment to creating age-friendly communities remains unchanged, our focus is expanding to also be future-ready. We believe Niagara has the opportunity to become one of Canada's leading longevity regions, where people can enjoy healthy aging, remain engaged longer, contribute their talents, and thrive at every stage of life. Through collaboration, knowledge sharing, volunteer engagement, and applied research, the Age-Friendly Niagara Council is helping to position Niagara as a leading region for age-friendly innovation and the emerging longevity economy. Incorporated in 2025 as an independent non-profit organization, it became important to create a digital home that reflects our mission, values, and future direction. Most importantly, the new website reflects the Age-Friendly Niagara Council's expanding role.
Active Aging Communities are designed to support healthy aging by helping individuals remain engaged, independent, and connected as they grow older. By offering accessible services, meaningful participation opportunities, and age-friendly environments, these communities empower residents to contribute their skills, experience, and leadership. This enhances the quality of life for all and promotes age-friendly practices across all twelve Niagara municipalities. Our mission aligns with the Age-Friendly Niagara Council’s vision: transforming Niagara into a region where longer lives create new opportunities for individuals, communities, and the longevity economy.
The Age-Friendly movement began in 2005 when the World Health Organization recognized that communities worldwide needed to adapt to longer lives and changing demographics. Since then, thousands of communities in over 50 countries have joined a global effort to create environments conducive to healthy aging, where individuals can remain connected and continue contributing throughout their lives. The Age-Friendly Niagara Council has been part of this movement for more than a decade, and today it is actively shaping its next chapter by focusing on healthy aging, community innovation, and the growing longevity economy.
The launch of the Age-Friendly Niagara Council's new website reflects more than just a change in appearance; it signifies the next stage in our evolution and our commitment to promoting healthy aging within Niagara's communities. This marks the beginning of a new collaboration focused on aging, the longevity economy, and the future of Niagara. Together, we aim to build a stronger, healthier, and more prosperous region for everyone.
We will soon be seeking participants for a new project underway, and we hope you will join the conversation.
